Sega Mega Drive Mini console introduced, Sega Ages coming to Switch
A Mega Drive equal to the Classic Mini SNES has been revealed in Japan, as Sega verify Mega Drive eShop for Switch.
After the success of the Classic Mini NES and SNES, Sega is finally going to jump onto the retro TV console bandwagon with an official Mega Drive Mini.
The console was announced at the Sega FES 2018 event (where they also revealed remasters of Shenmue I and II) but unfortunately there doesn’t seem to be any other information, including the number of games or when the device will be released.
Although we predict it’ll be ‘a lot’ and ‘this year’.
There have been numerous similar consoles released over the years but none of them have been made by Sega themselves and most suffer from poor emulation and sub-standard controllers.
However, Japanese sources suggests this may just be a repackaged version of the Mega Drive Flashback that’s already available in the West but not Japan. Although that’s not yet confirmed.
Announced at the same time, it’s also been revealed that a number of Sega Ages titles will be coming to the Switch eShop this year.
This doesn’t seem to have anything to do with a more general Virtual Console, but Sega has confirme an initial release of 15 titles – although they’ve only officially named Sonic The Hedgehog, Phantasy Star, and Thunder Force IV.
However, a translation of a Japanese article on forum ResetEra reveals that an Alex Kidd game (it’s not clear which one) will also be included, along with arcade game Gain Ground.
Apparently other arcade titles, along with Saturn and Dreamcast games, will also be added in the future, if the initial wave prove successful.
The team behind the ports is studio M2 who were responsible for the excellent 3D remasters on the 3DS and are exactly who you’d want working on the games.
This is also likely the reason that the recent Sega Mega Drive Classics collection wasn’t announced for Switch, and fans will probably be unhappy they don’t get the option to just buying everything in one package.
