Same-Day Visits Drive August Growth
Macau welcomed 4.48 million visitors in August 2026, marking a 6.1 percent year-on-year increase, according to data released by the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC). The overall gain was fueled by a substantial rise in same-day visitors, which offset simultaneous declines in overnight stays and international arrivals.
Same-day arrivals reached 2.85 million in August, an 11.7 percent increase from the same month in 2025. This segment accounted for nearly two-thirds of the total monthly visitor count. Conversely, overnight visitors dropped by 2.4 percent to 1.63 million. The average length of stay for overnight visitors held steady at 2.3 days, while the average stay across all visitor categories shortened by 0.1 day to 1.0 day.
Mainland China Remains Primary Source
Mainland China continued to serve as the dominant source market for Macau tourism. Visitors from the mainland numbered 3.56 million in August, representing a 9.3 percent increase from a year earlier. This group constituted close to 80 percent of the total visitor count for the month.
A significant portion of this traffic arrived under the Individual Visit Scheme, which permits eligible mainland residents to travel to Macau independently rather than as part of a tour group. Arrivals under this scheme reached 2.02 million, marking a 12.7 percent year-on-year increase. The growth in this segment underscores the continued reliance on independent mainland travelers for Macau’s visitor volume.
International and Regional Markets Diverge
Visitor numbers from other regions presented a mixed picture. Arrivals from Taiwan rose by 13.7 percent to 101,282, while visitors from Hong Kong decreased by 5.6 percent to 643,445.
International arrivals, defined as visitors from outside the Greater China region, declined by 9.8 percent to 171,679. Japan recorded the sharpest drop among the markets listed by DSEC, with visitor numbers falling by 31.1 percent to 11,464. The Philippines saw an 18.5 percent decrease, and India, Indonesia, and South Korea recorded declines ranging from 12.6 percent to 17.6 percent. Malaysia was an exception in this group, with visitor numbers rising by 2.1 percent.
Year-to-Date Trends Persist
For the first eight months of 2026, total arrivals in Macau increased by 7.7 percent to 28.96 million. The period saw strong growth in same-day traffic, which rose by 13.6 percent to 17.85 million. Conversely, overnight arrivals edged down by 0.6 percent to 11.11 million.
International arrivals for the January–August period increased by 3.4 percent to 1.77 million. The data indicates that while overall visitor volume is expanding, the composition of traffic is shifting toward shorter, same-day visits, particularly from the mainland.
Why It Matters
The shift toward same-day visits impacts revenue models for Macau’s casino operators, as shorter stays typically correlate with lower average spend per visitor compared to overnight guests. Regulators and operators must monitor this structural change in traffic composition, which favors high-volume, low-dwell-time gaming patterns. The continued decline in international arrivals also signals persistent challenges in diversifying the customer base beyond the mainland market.
